During the December 3 board meeting, the Highline School Board elected its new leaders for the coming year. Director Joe Van was selected to continue his service as board president, and Director Angelica Alvarez was elected to serve as board vice president.
President Van has served on the board since 2015 and has held multiple leadership roles, including serving as board president this year. He brings years of experience, strong community ties and a steady commitment to student-centered decision-making.
“Serving as board president means holding ourselves accountable to the Highline Promise and the expectations of our community,” said President Van. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue this work and to lead alongside directors who are deeply committed to every student’s success.”
Vice President Alvarez brings extensive experience in community leadership, family engagement and equity-focused work across education and nonprofit sectors. She has served in leadership roles on the board and remains deeply committed to centering family voice in district decision-making.
Outgoing board Vice President Stephanie Tidholm, who represents District 1, will continue serving as a board director. Her leadership over the past year helped guide important work across Highline.
“I want to thank Director Tidholm for her thoughtful leadership and steady partnership this past year,” said President Van. “Her leadership reflects the values of our community, and I look forward to continuing our work together on behalf of Highline students.”
