Family Letter 8/31/20

Family Letter 8/31/20

Dear Cascade families,

First and foremost, we thank you for your patience as we continue to work with Highline Public Schools’ central office to prepare for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. We know this summer has brought many ups and downs for students, families and community members, as well as many questions about what is the best way to resume learning this September. While we hope to address your wonderings and uncertainties in this first letter, we may not be able to answer them all at this time. However, please know that we will continue to be in communication with you as more information and details develop.

Last week, staff across Highline Public Schools began district led professional learning in preparation for launching our school year under the Distance Learning model. Cascade staff will continue this week to further deepen their knowledge virtual learning practices around family engagement, race and identity development, social emotional learning, and providing engaging and relevant learning experiences through digital platforms.

Many of our staff already expressed excitement for reconnecting with students and families in the next few weeks. Even though we know this school year we are embarking on will bring both opportunities and challenges, we look forward to collaborating and partnering with you to try to make it the best experience possible. We recognize that starting the school year way is not ideal in any circumstance, but the health and safety of our students, staff, and community remains a priority for Highline and Cascade. Until we are able to be together safely, we will do our best to make the virtual classroom as much of a community as we can.

To provide you with information relevant for the start of the year, we have included the following sections:

  • Information regarding Family Connection Days (September 3, 4, 8)
  • Tech tutorials preview
  • Overview of daily and weekly schedule.
  • 6th grade virtual orientation (September 3)
  • Chromebook distribution (September 1-3)
  • District Webinar on Fall 2020 information (September 2)

Family Connection Days

Your student’s advisor will be reaching out on Monday, August 31st via email to schedule a day and time for an introductory “meeting” between your family and the advisor. The purpose of this call is to welcome you to Cascade, get to know your student and family, and review information that will be helpful for launching the school year (schedules, technology needs/use, and communication preferences). Advisors will also be checking in to see how you are doing and connect you with any resources we have available in the district or community as needed. Interpreting and translation of materials will be available.

Technology Tutorials

Highline Public Schools has identified Google Classrooms as the primary platform for secondary learning in all middle and high schools. Our teachers will teach primarily through this platform and interact with students on Zoom. We have a list of tutorials included to help you become more familiar with them. Students will also receive instruction and opportunities to practice these programs in their advisories and first week of school.

6th Grade Virtual Orientation

Welcome to Cascade Webinar

The 6th grade team would like to invite all 6th grade students and families to attend an informational webinar meeting on September 3rd, at 4:00 PM.  During this meeting, we will go over important information about virtual learning, how to use technology and answer questions with families. We are so excited to meet all of our new students and their families!

Chromebook Distribution

If your student does not have a Highline School District issued Chromebook, we will be providing them a device to use for the rest of their time with Highline. This should include some 6th graders and other students that are new to Highline. We invite students and families to collect their Chromebook on either:

·         Tuesday, September 1st, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

·         Wednesday, September 2nd, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

·         Thursday, September 3rd, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

We will also be offering ongoing hours for drop-in technical support. This means students and families can visit the Cascade library for help and support in using and fixing Chromebook and online platforms. This will start September 8th, and occur every Monday-Thursday, from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

District Webinar on Fall 2020

In an effort to support families with the adjustment to virtual learning, the district will be hosting a webinar before the start of school. During this webinar they will give you the latest information about school this fall and do our best to answer your questions. This will be on Wednesday, September 2, with two time options: one in the morning and another in the evening.
