Future Cougars
Welcome to the Cascade Middle School community!
We are thrilled to have you join us and look forward to the opportunity to get to know and collaborate with you over the next three years. Middle school is an exciting time with many changes for families and students, which means you probably have questions. Please know we are here to work together, because our priority is for you to have a positive and engaging experience while at Cascade Middle School.
Jumpstart
Join us on September 3 (8:05-12:05) for a sneak-peek at your 6th Grade experience! Preview campus before anyone else, and get to know your teachers, classmates, and classes. Meals and regular bus routes will be provided.
Classes and Advisory
Middle school students have 6 periods of class: Language Arts, Social Studies (History), Math, Science, World Language (Spanish or Vietnamese), a semester of Music/Arts elective and a semester of PE/Health. In addition to their content classes, students also meet with their Advisory class Mondays through Thursdays.
Advisory is key to how we build community and teach students skills to do well in school. This is a class of about 20 students that stay together to learn social-emotional skills, team building, anti-bullying practices, study skills, college & career readiness.
For students in the Dual Language programs, ELA, Science, Arts (elective) and PE/Health are in English. Advisory, Math, Social Studies, and World Language are in the program language (Spanish/Vietnamese).
Currently, our Arts offerings are Choir, Instrumental Music (band, orchestra, ukulele), and Visual Art.
Registration and Next Steps
If you are a current 5th grader in the Highline Public Schools system, you are automatically registered to your neighborhood middle school.
New or transferring students will need to bring proof of your current address within our boundaries to our registrar, Anngela Sanchez. This includes official documents such as a utility bill or rental agreement. During this process, we’ll want to make sure your contact information is updated, and you have access to your ParentVue code to see your student’s gradebook and attendance.
Once enrolled, our 6th grade counselor, Ingebjorg Mcgrady, will create a schedule appropriate for your student’s grade and program. For arts or music placement, we are working with elementary music teachers. If you have specific questions, please reach out to Ms. Wayman.
Middle School Athletics
What do I need to do to be eligible?
At Cascade and across middle schools, 6th graders will be able to participate in 3 out of the 4 seasons.
Sixth graders are eligible for non-cut sports, which are Track/Field (Season 1), Wrestling (Season 3), and Cross Country (Season 4). Note: Physicals qualify for 2 years at a time.
